Carnival Selection Criteria (Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics)

Students must in all circumstances be in attendance and compete at a zone carnival in their school team in order to allow them to be considered for selection in the zone team to compete at the Sydney East Carnival unless:

  • They are competing at a higher level school sport PSSA/SSA (School Sport Australia) competition.

  1. In all cases an email must be sent to Tom Cleary - thomas.cleary@det.nsw.edu.au or the zone convenor.

  2. This request must be emailed at least two school days prior to the zone carnival.

  3. This request will be verified/endorsed by the student’s principal or school sports organiser listing the student’s school performance and any relevant previous Zone/Sydney East PSSA performance in that sport. This will then be considered for selection by a panel made up of the zone executive and convenor.

  4. Inclusion in the zone team under these circumstances will not be at the expense of individuals who have competed at, and qualified for the zone team based on the qualification procedures determined by the Sydney East PSSA, and is also subject to approval from the relevant Sydney East PSSA Convenor.

  5. The zone convenor and the Western Suburbs Zone PSSA executive will make the final decision on any inclusion into a zone team.

  6. Submitting a consideration for inclusion does not guarantee inclusion in the zone team.

  • Please note that Illness is not a valid reason to be considered for selection.

Team Selection Criteria

The zone pathway is for students who are able to demonstrate they are gifted and talented athletes. Zone trials are not a come and try day. Each school may send to the trial only the maximum number of students specified by the zone convenor.

In exceptional circumstances dispensation may be given by the zone convenor in consultation with the executive to allow additional students to trial. Schools are not obliged to send the maximum number of students to trial.

If a student is not available for the Sydney East PSSA Trial then the student is deemed ineligible to be chosen in the zone team.

All students trialling for a Western Suburbs PSSA zone team need to have the school’s permission to attend. Students must have their notes emailed to the convenor or have filled out the Google Form depending on how the zone convenor prefers the information before the trial.

Students must in all circumstances be in attendance and compete at the zone trial in order for them to be considered for selection in the zone team to compete at the Sydney East PSSA Trial unless:

  • They are competing at a higher level school sport PSSA/SSA (School Sport Australia) competition.

  • They are participating in an approved school based activity.

  • Suffering injury or illness.

  1. In all cases an email must be sent to Tom Cleary - thomas.cleary@det.nsw.edu.au or the zone convenor.

  2. This request must be emailed at least two school days prior to the zone trial.

  3. This request will be verified/endorsed by the student’s principal or school sports organiser listing the student’s school performance and any relevant previous Zone/Sydney East PSSA performance in that sport. This will then be considered for selection by a panel made up of the zone executive and convenor.

  4. Inclusion in the zone team under these circumstances will not be at the expense of individuals who have qualified for the zone team at the original trials.

  5. Submitting a consideration for inclusion does not guarantee inclusion in the zone team.

  6. If approved by the convenor and Western Suburbs Zone PSSA executive, the student will attend the first training session which then becomes a trial (only for them). If the convenor judges them to be at a suitable level with the rest of the team, they will be added to the team as an extra member.

  7. If the sport chosen for does not have a training session (tennis or cricket), the zone convenor will ask the Sydney East Convenor whether the student can attend as an additional entry.

  8. The zone convenor will choose the team based on performances and zone selection criteria.
